Aviation Mechanic Tests

Age Requirements

The minimum age for the DME test is 23; there is no age requirement for the remaining AM ratings.

Acceptable Forms of Authorization

All Aviation Mechanic Tests

  • Original FAA Form 8610-2 "Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application. Note that if either or both the Airframe and Powerplant boxes are checked on the 8610-2, along with the 'Original Issuance' box (and NOT the 'Added Rating' box), this serves as authorization for the AMG exam. If the 'Added Rating' box is checked, this indicates that the AMG exam is NOT required.
  • Graduates of a Part 147 school officially affiliated with a testing center may take the knowledge test upon presenting an appropriate graduation certificate or certificate of completion to the affiliated testing center. A graduate's name must be on the certified list received from the Part 147 school prior to administering the appropriate test(s).

Designated Mechanic Examiner Test

An applicant must submit a signed letter of acceptance from the FAA National Examiner Board. The original letter shall be destroyed by the test proctor after the applicant has been issued an official test report. A copy of the letter may be retained by the testing center.

All Aviation Mechanic and DME Tests

Failed, passed or expired Airman Test Report, provided that the applicant still has the ORIGINAL test report in his possession.

Retesting

AMA, AMG, and AMP Tests

Retests do not require a 30-day waiting period if the applicant presents a signed statement from an airman holding a rating and certificate sought by the applicant. This statement must certify that the airman has given the applicant additional instruction in each of the subjects failed, and that the airman considers the applicant ready for retesting. A 30-day wait is required if the applicant presents a failed test report without a signed statement.

DME Tests

A 30-day waiting period is required for retesting.

All Aviation Mechanic and DME Tests

Applicants retesting AFTER FAILURE are required to submit the applicable score report indicating failure. The original failed test report presented as authorization shall be retained by the proctor and attached to the applicable sign in/out log. The latest test taken will reflect the official score.

Applicants retesting IN AN ATTEMPT TO ACHIEVE A HIGHER PASSING SCORE may retake the same test for a better grade after 30 days. The latest test taken will reflect the official score. Applicants are required to submit the ORIGINAL applicable score report indicating previous passing score to the testing center prior to testing. Testing center personnel must collect and destroy this report prior to issuing the new test report.

 

Inspection Authorization Test

Age Requirements

The minimum age for the Inspection Authorization test is 21.

Acceptable Forms of Authorization

  • Failed, passing or expired Airman Test Report, provided the applicant still has the ORIGINAL test report in his possession.
  • Form 8610-1, "Mechanic's Application for Inspection Authorization". Item 14 on the form should be completed, including inspector signature, endorsement block checked, and office identification provided. The proctor shall retain this form and destroy it once the applicant has been issued a test report. The test center may keep a copy on file.

Retesting

A 90-day wait period is required for retesting.

  • Applicants retesting AFTER FAILURE are required to submit the applicable score report indicating failure. The original failed test report presented as authorization shall be retained by the proctor and attached to the applicable sign in/out log. The latest test taken will reflect the official score.
  • Applicants retesting IN AN ATTEMPT TO ACHIEVE A HIGHER PASSING SCORE may retake the same test for a better grade after 30 days. The latest test taken will reflect the official score.
