Earning Your FAA Certificate

If you are interested in obtaining authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to take your FAA Airframe and/or Power plant tests consider these facts:

  • If your experience was obtained in the military you must have an AFSC/MOS that the FAA recognizes as an approved  maintenance field.
  • You must, at a minimum, have 18 months of practical experience for one rating and at least 30 months to test for both (This experience is based on a full-time 40-hour-week schedule. Note that time spent in training or supervision will not be counted towards the practical experience requirement)
  • See our Exams page for additional requirements and procedures

You should bring all documentation that verifies your experience.
 Examples:

  • AIT Certificate
  • 2-1
  • DD214
  • Letter from Senior NCO/Maintenance Officer who can verify experience
  • Letter from certified FAA airframe/power plant mechanic who can verify experience
  • Official training records
  • See our Exams page for additional requirements and procedures

The FAA regional office is located at the Piedmont Airport in Greensboro, NC. You need to call and make an appointment, for them to help answer any questions you may have and sign-off on your FAA Approval form. The telephone number is (336) 662-1000. Please check out our Exams page for complete information on the FAA requirements. You may also contact E & Z with any questions regarding eligibility requirements for courses and tests.
